About Maastricht

Located in the southeastern part of the Netherlands, Maastricht is the capital and largest city of the Limburg Province. Running through it is the Meuse (Dutch: Maas),

the gorgeous river our city is named after.

Maastricht is one of the oldest Dutch cities, and is well beloved for its historic inner city and its celebration of carnival. Further, hidden below the St. Pietersberg hill are our unique caves. The tunnel system is about 60 kilometers long and houses artworks in its 8.000 passages. One might also know us as the birthplace of Andre Rieu, who annually hosts a concert series at the Vrijthof.

Adjacent to the Belgium border and only half an hour away from the German one, the city is truly European. In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty was signed, marking the birth of the European Union and profoundly amplifying European integration.

“The EU, as we know it today, owes its name and it’s nature to a treaty born in a Dutch city on the banks of the Meuse.”

– European Council

Today, Maastricht is home to one of the most international universities in the Netherlands.

Over half of our students are not Dutch nationals but came not only from all over the European Union but the globe.
We are excited to host you in Maastricht for our conference!
